In July 2025, Kosmos Energy marked World Mangrove Day in Saint-Louis, Senegal alongside Réseau des Organisations pour la Protection des Ecosystèmes de la Mangrove (ROPEM), local authorities, NGOs, and more than 350 community members.

The celebrations highlighted the extraordinary value of mangroves. These habitats protect coastlines from erosion, store up to five times more carbon than other forests, provide nursery grounds for fish, and support diverse birdlife.

As part of our 2025 Mangrove Restoration Project, we are:

  • Restoring 20 hectares of fragile mangrove areas with partners.
  • Supporting women's Economic Interest Groups to create mangrove nurseries and manage sustainable beekeeping ventures, building economic resilience while improving ecosystem health.
  • Engaging 250 students across five schools in hands-on environmental projects to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders.

The day also served to showcase some of the fruits of the mangroves, including honey, oysters, and innovative reed-and-cattail bricks - proof that sustainable livelihoods and environmental protection can go hand in hand. The main push for our education efforts are to highlight how the mangroves can be a source of economic benefit, away from the immediate option of harvesting firewood from the delicate ecosystem.

For over a decade, Kosmos has worked with communities to combine education, restoration, and livelihood opportunities, ensuring these irreplaceable forests remain healthy for generations to come. Together, we will continue to protect and restore mangroves, bearing out our promises that commit Kosmos to a sustainable future.
