The University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) remembers Langsam, an architectural historian, educator and longtime faculty member who passed away Aug. 7 at the age of 91.
Walter E. Langsam, a longtime DAAP faculty member and architectural historian, influenced generations of students and contributed to the preservation and understanding of Cincinnati's architectural heritage.
Langsam was a retired adjunct professor of DAAP. For nearly three decades, Langsam brought his knowledge of architecture and Cincinnati history into the classroom, helping generations of students understand the connections between the built environment, community and lived experience.

Beyond teaching, Langsam was a leading voice in documenting and preserving Cincinnati's architectural heritage. His scholarship included Great Houses of the Queen City, co-authored with photographer Alice Weston. He also developed a biographical dictionary of architects who worked in Greater Cincinnati before World War II.
He was also known for his broad interests in the arts and his ability to connect people, places and ideas. His legacy at DAAP extends through the students he taught and the architectural history he helped preserve for future generations.
DAAP extends its condolences to Langsam's family, former students, colleagues and friends throughout the Cincinnati community. A memorial service is planned for the fall.
