Pennsylvania American Water Announces $2.7 Million Youghiogheny River Crossing Pipe Project in Connellsville

More than 1,000 feet of water main to be installed across the river

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 6, 2025) - Today, Pennsylvania American Water announced plans to install a new water main across the Youghiogheny River between the east and west sides of Connellsville City. The $2.7 million investment project will increase the reliability of the water system by providing a new water supply from the treatment plant to customers on the west side of the city.

The project, which started in mid-October, involves laying 1,080 feet of 12-inch high-density polyethylene water main inside an 18-inch steel casing under the Youghiogheny River, stretching from West Peach and North Arch streets to the intersection of Meason and North Second streets.

Additionally, the project includes installing 565 feet of 12-inch ductile pipe along Meason Street from North Third Street to North 1 Street, and along West Peach Street from North Water Street to North Meadow Lane.

Contractors will bore below the bed of the Youghiogheny River and then pull the new pipeline through the borehole.

"Horizontal directional drilling is a more economical and environmentally friendly option for this type of installation, as opposed to conventional open-trench methods," said Sara Bolenbaugh, project manager, Pennsylvania American Water. "Working under the riverbed allows us to avoid the significant costs and other issues associated with damming the river. We can complete the project in a more timely and cost-efficient manner with less impact on the environment."

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of November. Water service to customers will not be impacted during this project. Final street restoration will be completed in the spring of 2026.

For worksite safety, Pennsylvania American Water asks that members of the public do not approach its employees or contractors. For more information, contact the company's Customer Service Organization at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
