Statement from Minister Gehmair on the new Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture

Minister of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture Jen Gehmair has issued the following statement:

"A strong economy and a vibrant cultural sector go hand in hand. Businesses, creators, tourism operators and community organizations all play vital roles in the Yukon's prosperity, identity and quality of life.

"Effective April 1, 2026, the departments of Economic Development and Tourism and Culture are operating under a single budget as the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Culture. This change positions government to work more efficiently and better align services with the needs of Yukoners.

"This is part of our government's commitment to cut red tape and improve how we deliver programs and support business growth and client service. Bringing these two departments together gives staff greater flexibility to tackle shared priorities and address larger policy and program challenges using existing resources.

"There will be no immediate changes to staffing or reporting structures, so businesses, artists, cultural organizations and tourism operators will keep the same points of contact. We look forward to working with staff, industry and partners as we explore further opportunities to better serve Yukoners.

"Aligning Economic Development with Tourism and Culture under one department allows us to better coordinate efforts to support innovation, investment, cultural and creative industries and sustainable economic growth across the territory.

"By bringing together our strengths, expertise and resources, we are better positioned to support Yukon businesses and the arts and cultural sectors while ensuring the government operates responsibly and delivers value for Yukoners."
