Geisinger joins statewide efforts to promote organ donation this April

DANVILLE, Pa. - Throughout April, Geisinger is recognizing National Donate Life Month by highlighting the lifesaving impact of organ donation. During the first two weeks of the month, several Geisinger hospitals held flag-raising ceremonies to honor organ donors and raise awareness about the ongoing need for lifesaving transplants.

"The need for organ donors continues to outpace availability," said Michael Marvin, MD, chair of the Geisinger Department of Transplantation and Liver Surgery. "In Pennsylvania alone, thousands of people are waiting for a transplant. Organ donation directly determines whether those patients get the chance to move forward with lifesaving care."

Staff, patients and community members participated in the ceremonies at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital, Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

Flag-raising events are held annually during National Donate Life Month to promote awareness of organ, eye and tissue donation and to encourage individuals to consider registering as donors. More than 100,000 people nationwide are currently waiting for an organ transplant, including more than 6,000 Pennsylvanians, underscoring the continued need for registered and living donors across the Commonwealth.
