Former Marquette men’s basketball, NBA player shares real estate insight with students

Amal McCaskill built his career on teamwork, preparation and resilience - first as a Marquette men's basketball standout and NBA player, and now as director of KWILL Merchant Advisors. Returning to campus, McCaskill shared how lessons learned on the court continue to shape his approach to entrepreneurship and commercial real estate leadership.

Joined by Hugh Williams, co-founder and managing member of KWILL Merchant Advisors, McCaskill took part in a panel discussion hosted by the Marquette Commercial Real Estate Club, offering Marquette Business students a firsthand look at how athletic discipline can translate into business success.

Reflecting on his journey after graduation, McCaskill described his transition from professional basketball to entrepreneurship, emphasizing continuous learning, a strong work ethic and the ability to navigate criticism and setbacks. "What stood out most during the panel was how intentional Amal and Hugh were about connecting with students," said Alexandra Ritchie, co-president of the Marquette Commercial Real Estate Club. "They broke down their journey in a way that felt real and accessible, not abstract. You could see students leaning in, thinking differently about their own paths and realizing that their careers don't have to follow a traditional script."

McCaskill played for the Golden Eagles from 1992 to 1996 before being selected by the Orlando Magic with the 49th selection of the 1996 NBA Draft. His professional journey took him across the world - including stops in Spain, Lebanon, China, Italy, Venezuela and South Korea - before beginning a career in real estate and media.

He and Williams elaborated on their experience in the real estate industry, discussing capital flows across markets, varying cap rates and the importance of vetting and researching investment opportunities.

"Alexandra and I were honored to host Amal McCaskill and Hugh Williams and create a space for our students to hear such an honest conversation about competition, resilience and entrepreneurship," said Ella Reimer, co-president of the Marquette Commercial Real Estate Club. "Listening to how they translated lessons from high level athletics into building careers and companies in commercial real estate was incredibly impactful, and exactly the kind of perspective we want our members exposed to."

In addition to participating in the panel, McCaskill and Williams shared insight with students in a lecture facilitated by Andy Hunt, executive director of the Vieth Institute for Real Estate Leadership. Afterward, the duo attended the Marquette men's basketball game.

The Vieth Institute for Real Estate Leadership is committed to providing applied learning opportunities for students, connecting classroom instruction and theory with real-world application.
