Strengthening Communication and Cooperation with the International Community for Peaceful Coexistence on the Korean Peninsula
Ministry of Unification Holds a Policy Briefing for International Organizations (December 16)
On December 16, the Ministry of Unification held a policy briefing, inviting ambassadors to the Republic of Korea from key countries and heads of Korea offices of international organizations.
The briefing was organized to enhance the international community's understanding of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and inter-Korean relations in 2025, as well as the government's policy direction toward North Korea in 2026.
The briefing was attended by representatives from a total of 41 countries and organizations, including: 14 countries from the Korean Peninsula Club (countries concurrently accredited to both South and North Korea), such as Australia; 13 countries from the Peace Club (countries maintaining diplomatic missions in North Korea), such as Sweden; ambassadors, chargés d'affaires, and deputy chiefs of mission from Japan and EU member states; and four international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and UNICEF.
In his opening remarks, Vice Minister of Unification Kim Nam Jung emphasized the need to restore trust and resume suspended dialogue in order to establish peaceful coexistence between the South and the North. He outlined the government's preemptive measures for peace and explained the three principles of peaceful coexistence.
He further noted that 2026 will be a critical year marked by multiple political and diplomatic developments, making it an important period for a shift in the situation on the Korean Peninsula. He called on the international community to maintain continued interest and cooperation in helping make next year the first year of peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.
Ambassadors and other participants expressed that the policy briefing was helpful in deepening their understanding of the South Korean government's policy toward North Korea and affirmed their strong support for the government's efforts to establish lasting peace on the Peninsula.
The Ministry of Unification stated that it will continue to engage in close communication and cooperation with the international community to promote peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula.
