Mayor Bass Issues Statement Honoring Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s Historic Legacy

LOS ANGELES - Mayor Karen Bass issued the following statement after Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced she will not run for re-election to Congress:

"It was the honor of a lifetime to serve alongside Madam Speaker Nancy Pelosi. When I was elected to Congress, I had just served as Speaker of the California State Assembly and I had the opportunity to witness her masterful leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives. In the 12 years I served in the House, Madam Speaker/Leader never lost a vote and navigated very complex issues and political dynamics.

"It is my hope that, one day, the history books will accurately describe her tenure in office. During the first Trump Administration, it was Nancy Pelosi who skillfully managed the chaos and enabled the government to function. Before I was elected, she successfully secured passage of historic climate change legislation and refused to give up fighting for passage of the Affordable Care Act when many others believed it was not possible to pass legislation to provide health care for the American people. I wish her well and hope to continue to work with her when she returns home to California."
