Career Services hosting Career Day, networking events during fall semester

Northwest Missouri State University Career Services will continue to provide students with networking, career development and mock interview opportunities this fall to help students gain real-world experience before they enter the workforce.

In addition to networking events, Career Services assists students with job and internship searches, résumé and cover letter help, networking tips and interview preparation. Career Services staff can help guide students on where to look and how to approach employers.

"We can see the job search angle a little bit differently," Hannah Christian, the director of Career Services, said. "With more experience comes knowing where to look, knowing who to contact, knowing who in the alumni network already operates in that field and connecting them with that. A little bit of networking, a little bit of having a different perspective."

Career Day

Career Day is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The event is an opportunity for students to meet with a variety of employers and graduate school program representatives to discuss internship and full-time employment opportunities.

There is no cost or registration for the event. Students are also encouraged to bring copies of their résumés to share with employers and to dress in professional attire.

Mock Interview Days

Mock Interview Days allow students to meet with real-world employers during 30-minute increments and receive feedback on their résumés and interview skills. Twenty minutes are typically reserved for the interview, while the remaining 10 minutes are used for feedback.

Career Services offers Mock Interview Days with different academic majors to provide interview experience closely related to their interests.

• Computer science and information systems: Thursday, Oct. 9
• Business: Wednesday, Oct. 22
• Language, literature and writing: Wednesday, Oct. 22
• Behavioral sciences: Wednesday, Oct. 29
• Health and natural sciences: Wednesday, Oct. 29
• Education: Wednesday, Nov. 5

Students should reserve an interview time by visiting https://www.nwmissouri.edu/career/events/mid.htm. Mock interview spots are based on employer availability and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must submit a résumé at least one week before the event.

Meet the Pros

Career Services offers Meet the Pros events for various majors and career fields. The event is designed for students to build connections and ask questions of professionals in their fields of interest.

• Language, literature and writing: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Tower View Dining Room

• Geographic information science: 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in Room 117 of Valk Center

Career Closet

Career Services helps Northwest students dress for success by offering attire for all types of career fields at the Career Closet, located at the Support Services Building on campus. It provides clothing and accessories to Northwest students at no cost.

Students may visit the Career Closet between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or make an appointment with Career Services to visit at other times.

Northwest's focus on profession-based learning

In addition to the multitude of resources offered through Career Services, Northwest places a high emphasis on profession-based learning to help graduates get a jumpstart on their careers.

Students have opportunities to build their résumés with experiences on campus in nearly every area of study, including the Horace Mann Laboratory School, National Public Radio affiliate KXCV, the R.T. Wright Farm, Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area, a partnership with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency or Knacktive, a student-driven integrated digital marketing communications agency. In conjunction with its emergency and disaster management program, Northwest organizes and hosts Missouri Hope, an annual mass casualty training exercise that attracts first responders and emergency workers from throughout the nation and provides hands-on training in preparation for a natural disaster.

Upon graduating from Northwest, 93 percent of Northwest bachelor's degree earners and 98 percent of master's degree earners secure employment or continue their education within six months of graduation, according to the most recent data.
