Mayor Bowser to Dedicate Modernized Dorothy I. Height Elementary School in Ward 4 Following $63 Million Investment

(Washington, DC) - On Thursday, December 4 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will join DC Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee and members of the school community for a building tour and dedication of the modernized Dorothy I. Height Elementary School in Ward 4. The new Dorothy I. Height Elementary School opened last school year following a $63 million investment and features 86,000 square feet of reimagined learning spaces for nearly 400 students in Pre-K3 through 5th grade.

The dedication will honor civil rights activist and longtime Washingtonian Dr. Dorothy I. Height, who served as national president for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and led the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) as president for 40 years. The program will include a student-led reenactment of one of Dr. Height's most famous speeches.

Since 2015, Mayor Bowser has invested more than $3.6 billion to modernize schools across all eight wards, including over $750 million in Ward 4 alone. The FY26 budget includes an additional $197 million for school modernizations and renovations in Ward 4, including projects at Barnard Elementary School, LaSalle-Backus Elementary School, and Whittier Elementary School.
