Land Sale Will Support North Lawndale Affordable Housing Project

City Council today approved the sale of a .10-acre City lot in North Lawndale to support an affordable housing project on the site of the former Henson Elementary School.

The lot at 1335 S. Springfield Ave. will be sold to MKB Business Strategies LLC as part of the group's $25,000 purchase of the Henson site for redevelopment as 52 affordable homes. The project's initial phase is planned to include 14 single-family homes and three-flats. Phase two will include 12 single-family homes and three-flats.

Vacant since 2013, the former school building will be razed to accommodate the housing project.

The City holds the lot in trust for the Board of Education, which will receive proceeds from the sale. The lot was previously used for parking.
