Environmental science senior named Lamar University First-Gen Student of the Month

Drake Rothenberger, an environmental science senior from Nederland, has been recognized as Lamar University's September First-Generation Student of the Month.

Rothenberger said his success stems from the support of teachers and professors who went above and beyond to guide him.

"I remember staying after school for multiple hours while my teachers would help me with my college applications and essays. I remember when a teacher I didn't even have took time off work to take me to a scholarship interview. I remember my professors who gave me grace and understanding when I didn't know how something worked," he said.

With that support, Rothenberger now attends Lamar University on a full-ride scholarship and plans to pursue both a Ph.D. and a J.D. after completing his undergraduate degree.

"To me, being first-gen means remembering not what I didn't have, but instead focusing on the support I was given by those who wanted to see me succeed," Rothenberger said.

Lamar University's First-Generation Connections program provides resources and support to students whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree in the U.S., helping them navigate academic, social, and personal challenges while building a community for first-generation students to thrive.
