Mariachi Opera in the Park: July 24

The sounds of mariachi and opera will fill Shute Park on Friday, July 24, as Opera in the Park Portland presents Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. Following performances in Chicago, New York, and Paris, Hillsboro will host the world's first mariachi opera during this free outdoor event!

This unique performance takes place on Friday, July 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Shute Park Amphitheatre in Hillsboro's Downtown Cultural Arts District. Bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy an evening of live music and storytelling. Be sure to pick up dinner or a snack from food carts on site.

The performance will be presented in both Spanish and English, blending the traditions of opera and mariachi to bring together two musical genres and create a memorable experience. See more event details.

About the Story

Cruzar la Cara de la Luna ("To Cross the Face of the Moon") follows the story of Laurentino Velásquez, who leaves his wife and young son in Mexico to pursue new opportunities in the United States. The opera begins in present-day Texas, where Laurentino reflects on the choices and sacrifices that shaped his life.

As the story unfolds across three generations of the Velásquez family, audiences witness the challenges, hopes, and resilience that define the Mexican American experience. The vibrant mariachi music explores the emotional realities of building a new life while maintaining deep connections to home and family. The moving storyline creates a performance that is both entertaining and deeply meaningful.

About the Production

The Shute Park Amphitheatre will welcome a 40-member chorus, a 48-piece orchestra, seven principal soloists, and two actors. Traditional mariachi instruments and rhythms will be woven together with a full symphony orchestra to create a distinctive musical experience.
Co-created by José "Pepe" Martínez and Leonard Foglia, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna has continued to evolve since its world premiere in 2010. Because there is no commercial recording of the fully orchestrated production, attending in person is the only way to experience it in its complete form.
