Council advances Shores Park master planning

Master planning for Shores Park continued Sept. 8 as the City Council voted unanimously to reaffirm guiding principles and preferred park amenities to improve the City-owned property at 9th Street and Stratford Court.

The Council's action included establishing a new Shores Park Master Plan Ad-hoc Advisory Committee to advise staff and Councilmembers on completion of the master plan for the property. The Council named Deputy Mayor Tracy Martinez and Councilmember John Spelich to serve as liaisons to the committee.

Community members can

to serve on the Shores Park Master Plan Ad-hoc Advisory Committee.

During their deliberations, Councilmembers directed staff to evaluate whether an off-leash dog area should be separate or share a recreational turf area during limited hours.

The advisory committee, consultant and staff should also examine the possibility of locating the Alvarado House on the property, Councilmembers agreed.

The Council agreed that park planning should adhere to the following guiding principles:

  • Provide a beautiful and peaceful neighborhood park environment that serves the residents of Del Mar.
  • Create an inclusive space that offers recreational opportunities for all ages.
  • Thoughtfully integrate the needs and desires of residents visiting the park with or without pets.
  • Capture the dramatic views to the Pacific Ocean.
  • Provide a gardenesque park setting that is environmentally and economically sustainable.
  • Integrate the activities, program, circulation, and recreational needs of the
  • Winston school.
  • Create a park that reflects the rich history, unique culture, and community character of Del Mar.

In 2008, the City purchased the 5.3-acre property from Del Mar Union School District with the intent of preserving open space and recreational uses while supporting the continued operation of the Winston School.
