Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Holds Series of High-Level Meetings with Country Representative at the United Nations

The Defence Secretary of Sri Lanka, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), held a series of multilateral meetings on the sidelines of his official visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN, H.E. Mr. Jayantha Jayasooriya on 23 April (2026).

In a bilateral meeting with H.E. Wellington Bencosme, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the UN, the Sri Lankan delegation discussed regional cooperation in support of operations in Haiti. Focus was placed on facilitating logistical arrangements, including troop movement, medical assistance, and welfare support for Sri Lankan personnel.

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Thuyacontha (Retd) emphasised the importance of effective coordination at mission headquarters and the inclusion of Sri Lankan officers in key roles.

The delegation also participated in a high-level Haiti Security and Humanitarian Meeting convened at the Office of the Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN. The meeting reviewed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Haiti and emphasized the urgent need for coordinated international support.
