WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Dave McCormick (R-PA) and John Fetterman (D-PA) today celebrated U.S. Steel's Board of Directors approving a nearly $3 billion investment in a new hot strip mill at the company's Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania. This announcement comes after Senator McCormick's successful push with members of the Pennsylvania delegation, particularly U.S. Representatives Dan Meuser (R-PA-09) and Mike Kelly (R-PA-16), to win the Trump administration's support for the U.S. Steel-Nippon partnership.
"This is exactly what Senator Fetterman and I fought for: real investment, good-paying jobs, and a strong future for American steelmaking in the Mon Valley," said Senator McCormick. "This is a major step toward delivering on the promises of the U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel partnership. Thanks to President Trump's leadership, and with Congressmen Meuser and Kelly's strong support, we secured a historic agreement, and now we're seeing that commitment turn into action. The Mon Valley helped build America, and with this investment, Pennsylvania steelworkers will help build its future."
The new hot strip mill will increase annual production capacity from approximately 2.2 million tons to 3.5 million tons and expand the range of steel products U.S. Steel can produce for customers. Initial production is expected in late 2029.
The investment builds on the historic U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel partnership, which includes a broader commitment to invest $11 billion in U.S. Steel facilities. The partnership is expected to help secure the future of U.S. Steel's Pennsylvania operations, protect more than 11,000 jobs in the Commonwealth, and create additional opportunities for American workers.
Senator McCormick recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea, where he met with government officials and business leaders to strengthen economic and security partnerships and encourage additional investment in Pennsylvania. During the trip, he emphasized the opportunity to build on the U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel partnership and bring more jobs, capital, and industrial growth to the Commonwealth.
