Iowa Hero Academy Applications Are Open For Teenagers Interested in First Responder Careers

Des Moines, Iowa- Wednesday, March 11, 2026 - Now is the time for young women to apply for an experience unlike any other in Central Iowa.

Applications are currently open for young women ages 16 - 18 to join the Iowa Hero Academy - a weeklong camp put on by local female first responders.

"This camping experience provides inspiration and experience to young women who may become our future firefighters, police officers and military members," Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen said. "I've seen firsthand how valuable this experience is to the next generation of female first responders who get the chance to learn from women who are doing the job today."

This year's camp is a six-day, overnight camp that will take place July 26-31 at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa. Over the course of the week, camp counselors and current first responders challenge campers to push their boundaries, gain lifelong skills and experience potential career opportunities through hands on activities, training and guest speakers.

"This camp brings a lot of laughs and smiles throughout the week, but it also empowers young women to improve and stretch themselves," Des Moines Fire Department Medic Hali VanVelzen said. "I love seeing the excitement on the faces of our campers as they accomplish something that they didn't know they could do, and how they help each other overcome obstacles together."

Emphasis will be placed on encouraging the young women to develop leadership skills, teamwork and self-confidence.

Applicants must complete the application and the "Get To Know You" form before the application deadline of April 25, 2026.

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the Hero Academy webpage or e-mail [email protected] for additional information.
