The African Union Commission and the African Capacity Building Foundation's Training on the African Carbon Market: Training of African Ambassadors and Diplomats Accredited to the African Union

INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

WHAT: The African Union Commission (AUC), through the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), in partnership with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) and with the support of the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA), is convening a one-day High-Level Training Workshop on the African Carbon Market for Ambassadors and Diplomats accredited to the African Union. The training operationalises the Africa Action Plan on Carbon Markets (AAPCM), endorsed by the AU Assembly in February 2025 (Assembly/AU/Dec.926(XXXVIII)), and builds on the COP29 decisions on high-integrity carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

WHERE: African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (Small Conference Hall1)

WHEN: 8 July 2026, 09:00-14:30 EAT.

WHO: Organised by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), with the support of the Azerbaijan International Development Agency (AIDA).

WHY: The training will equip African Ambassadors and diplomats with a comprehensive understanding of carbon market mechanisms, policy and regulatory frameworks, and strategic opportunities - enabling them to champion enabling environments for green growth, mobilise climate finance, and strengthen Africa's common position in international carbon market negotiations.

Key Discussion Areas, the training will focus on:

  • Introduction to carbon markets and their relevance for Africa;
  • Policy and regulatory frameworks for carbon markets;
  • Opportunities and challenges for Africa in carbon markets, including investment and market integrity;
  • Leveraging Africa's natural assets and community benefit-sharing;
  • Case studies and success stories from African carbon market initiatives; and
  • High-Level Panel: Africa's strategic position in global carbon markets.

The training will gather approximately 110 participants, comprising Ambassadors and diplomats from African Union Member States' Embassies and Permanent Missions to the African Union, alongside African Union Commission staff.

Media representatives are warmly invited to attend on 8 July 2026 to cover this important continental initiative aimed at strengthening Africa's capacity to champion effective, high-integrity carbon markets and unlock climate finance for sustainable development. Bilateral interviews are welcomed but will be based on the speakers' availability and at their discretion.
