Today, Trump and Republicans' war in Iran has now reached six-months. Over and over again, the American people have heard an endless parade of broken and shifting promises about the war from the president. We were told the war was a "total and complete victory," "won't be difficult," was "projected [to last] four to five weeks", was "winding down," was ending "very soon," was "ahead of schedule," was going to end in "two or three weeks," then "two to three days," then "very close," then again a "few days," then "going to end really soon." None of this has been true.
The war has cost tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, wounded hundreds and killed 18 American servicemembers, depleted our stockpile of long-range missiles, and cost New Yorkers billions at the gas pump.
Below is a statement on this anniversary from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand:
"Today marks six months since Donald Trump launched his disastrous war with Iran that congressional Republicans have fully supported.
"We were told this president and Republicans would bring peace and lower prices. Instead, they've wasted billions on war while leaving working families behind.
"This war was launched without a clear plan, executed without a coherent strategy, and has become a costly, self-inflicted disaster. Every justification we were given for this conflict has proven hollow.
"Our service members did not volunteer to be pawns in a chaotic, unauthorized war with no plan and no end in sight. Tragically, many have been wounded or lost their lives in this needless war.
"And here at home, New Yorkers have paid the price for this war as well- at the grocery store and the gas pump. This administration has unlimited money for bombs, ballrooms, and billionaires - but nothing for the American people: for their healthcare, their food, their housing, and for their lives.
"New Yorkers-and all Americans-deserve better. I pray for our troops and for the end to this war."
