In 2022, the state approved a one-time $7 million appropriation to UA for mariculture research, workforce development and industry support

A free online webinar April 15 will highlight Alaska's growing mariculture industry and its role in coastal economies and food security.

Melissa "Missy" Good, a mariculture specialist with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska Sea Grant, will present at noon as part of a session hosted by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service.

Good will discuss species being cultivated in Alaska, including kelp and shellfish, and explain how mariculture products move from harvest to market. She will also touch on the expanding uses of seaweeds, which are used not only as food but in fertilizers, animal feed, biostimulants and emerging biomaterials.

Registration is available online at bit.ly/AlaskaMariculture. For more information, contact Molly Johansson at 907-786-6313 or [email protected].
