Kaine Statement on Trump’s New Taxes on Canadian Goods

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump's decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on many Canadian imports:

"President Trump's move to impose tariffs on Canada will raise costs for Americans at a time when prices are already through the roof because of his foolish and illegal war with Iran. These new taxes continue Trump's obsession with using outdated laws to punish one of our closest allies and everyday Americans. The Supreme Court already offered Trump an off-ramp for his unconstitutional tariff regime, but he's too clueless to take it. I'm going to do everything I can to stop the Trump-Vance Administration from raising costs, harming businesses, and hurting our economy."

Earlier this year, Kaine and Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) introduced the Reclaim Trade Powers Act to repeal Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. Kaine has been outspoken against President Trump's new taxes on Americans. Kaine led four successful bipartisan pieces of legislation-one in April 2025 and three in October 2025-to passage in the Senate to nullify Trump's global tariff and levies on Canada and Brazil.
