EU climate and environment ministers seek common understanding of how EU will update its Nationally Determined Contribution

The EU Environment Council will convene at an extraordinary meeting in Brussels on 18 September. The aim is to agree on the letter of intent to be submitted to the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Climate Change. The letter would concern the EU's emission reduction commitment, i.e. the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The ministers will also discuss the EU's 2040 climate target and the proposal to amend the European Climate Law. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

Nationally Determined Contribution important signal to international partners

The EU's letter of intent would describe how the EU will update the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) before the climate conference in Belém.

The Paris Agreement requires each party to the convention to update their NDCs every five years, and the next round of submissions is due just ahead of the meeting in Belém.

The Danish Presidency has prepared a draft for the EU's common NDC submission that contains the EU's emission reduction target for 2040 and the calculated target for 2035.

"For us it is very important that the two discussions at the meeting will be closely linked to each other. This is vital in terms of the predictability of the EU's climate policy. We must have a clear vision that clean solutions are worth investing in, and that we will continue to lead the way in the global context," Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala says.
