The European Commission has presented a new package of proposals aimed at improving energy affordability for citizens and strengthening Europe's strategic independence. At a time of geopolitical uncertainty and rising living costs, ensuring affordable and secure energy for households and businesses remains a key priority for progressives across Europe.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
"Affordable energy is essential for Europe's social and economic stability. Too many Europeans still struggle to pay their energy bills. The proposed package is an important step towards lowering costs for households, and mobilizing EIB funding for energy efficiency and innovative clean energy technologies, while accelerating the clean energy transition and strengthening Europe's energy independence. What matters is that more energy is produced across different parts of Europe. An increase in energy production is needed.
I also want to acknowledge the work of European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera and Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen in advancing a more progressive and socially focused European energy policy.
Progressives will continue working to ensure that the energy transition delivers tangible benefits for citizens, protects vulnerable households, and strengthens Europe's resilience in an increasingly uncertain world."
Nearly one in ten Europeans cannot afford to adequately heat their homes, and millions struggle to pay their energy bills on time. Measures that reduce electricity costs, improve market transparency, and empower consumers are therefore essential to ensure that the energy transition is fair, inclusive, and socially sustainable.
