Akron-Canton Airport Unveils Modernized Sensory Room in Partnership with Wolff & Phan Autism Center

GREEN, OH - Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is proud to announce the completion of its refreshed, research-backed Sensory Room, created to provide a calming and supportive space for travelers needing a break from the busy airport environment.

First introduced in 2020, CAK's Sensory Room has become a beloved amenity, particularly for children who benefit from reduced stimuli during the travel experience.

To ensure the space reflects the latest in therapeutic, inclusive design, CAK partnered with the Wolff & Phan Autism Center (Wolff-PAC), located in Fairlawn, Ohio. Fully accredited by the Autism Commission on Quality (ACQ), Wolff-PAC guided the airport through enhancements to better serve individuals with autism and related disabilities.

"As an organization dedicated to supporting the autism community, we are honored to collaborate with Akron-Canton Airport on this important initiative," said Kim P. Wolff, Founder of Wolff & Phan Autism Center. "Our mission has always been to create environments where individuals with autism feel understood, respected, and empowered. CAK's commitment to providing a thoughtful, sensory-friendly space is a meaningful step toward making air travel more accessible for all."

The room's retrofit was finalized in December 2025, and CAK celebrated the upgraded space with a ribbon cutting on December 10. The event highlighted both organizations' shared commitment to enhancing the airport experience for families of all abilities.

"At CAK, we believe every traveler deserves to feel welcomed, comfortable, and supported," said Ren Camacho, President and CEO of Akron-Canton Airport. "By modernizing our Sensory Room and deepening our partnership with Wolff-PAC, we're continuing to build an inclusive airport environment where all guests can enjoy a more relaxing travel journey."

Continued Commitment: Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

The Sensory Room is one component of CAK's broader accessibility efforts. Since launching the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program in 2022, the airport has worked to increase awareness and support for travelers with non-visible disabilities.

Through the program, airport guests may request Sunflower accessories such as lanyards, pins, or bracelets, which discreetly signal to airport staff that the wearer may need additional time, patience, or assistance navigating the airport.

Travelers can pick up accessories at the Visitor Information Center, any airline ticket counter, or request them in advance through CAK's website. To date, more than 685 complimentary accessories have been utilized.

Passengers who require additional accommodations are encouraged to coordinate with their airline and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), including the use of TSA Cares which is a helpline that supports travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or special circumstances during the security screening process. Travelers may also request a TSA passenger support specialist for on-the-spot assistance.
