Gov. Rhoden Cuts Ribbon New Edmunds County Jail
PIERRE, S.D. - Today, Governor Larry Rhoden cut the ribbon on the new Edmunds County Jail, continuing his emphasis on support for local law enforcement. You can find a photo from the ribbon cutting here.
"Keeping South Dakotans safe is the most important duty of government, and our partners in law enforcement are vital to making sure we are successful," said Governor Larry Rhoden. "Similar to the new prisons the state is building, local jails play a key role in keeping our communities safe. Congratulations to Edmunds County and our law enforcement community for this vital public safety investment!"
This 40-bed jail was designed with cost savings and partnerships in mind. It has the capabilities for video court hearings and digitizing legal mail to save ongoing costs of prisoner transport. It will also house inmates from other counties. Neighboring Walworth County has already signed an agreement to take eight of the 40 beds.
"This jail will be a strong asset to our community, playing a critical role in maintaining order, supporting law enforcement efforts, and ensuring that those who pose a threat are held accountable," said Edmunds County SheriffJonathan Waldner. "I am grateful for Governor Rhoden's leadership as we work together to enhance public safety and get dangerous criminals off our streets."
Last month, Governor Rhoden delivered several results for safer communities by breaking ground on a new 1,500 bed men's prison. Later this summer, a new 300 bed women's prison with 96 new drug treatment beds will open. Last year, Governor Rhoden created the Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force and invested $1.5 million into equipment for inmate education and skills training.
