Tallahassee Man Pleads Guilty to Interstate Stalking

Tallahassee, Florida - Matthew D. Weger, 33, of Tallahassee, Florida, pleaded guilty in federal court to interstate stalking. The plea was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

U.S. Attorney Heekin said: "This successful prosecution ensures this defendant will be held accountable for the numerous criminal threats he made toward the victim over the course of several months. My office will not hesitate to aggressively prosecute anyone whose behavior exceeds the limits of constitutionally protected speech and crosses the line into criminal threats."

Court documents reveal that law enforcement received a tip from an individual regarding concerns about threatening statements the defendant made against law enforcement officers. Law enforcement interviewed the individual and learned that the defendant had been stalking the individual from at least December 14, 2023, through June 25, 2024. The defendant had left threatening messages and voicemails, including threats to kill. The defendant refused to stop calling and messaging. The individual eventually blocked the defendant's number, but the defendant was still able to leave voicemails.

The defendant also sent threatening messages to the individual through Cash App as messages which accompanied online payments. In total, the defendant sent approximately $2,000 in $1.00 increments. Each payment was accompanied by a threatening message.

Weger faces up to 5 years' imprisonment.

Sentencing is scheduled for February 5, 2027, at 1:00 pm before United States District Judge T. Kent Wetherell, II in Tallahassee, Florida.

The case involved a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Tallahassee Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Eric Welch.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.
