Rep. Clyde Honors Hiawassee Couple as Special Georgians of the Ninth

GAINESVILLE, GA - Over the weekend, Congressman Andrew Clyde (GA-09) recognized World War II veteran Jim Rittenhouse and his wife, Jean, as Special Georgians of the Ninth in honor of his remarkable service and their storied legacy.

At 18-years-old, Jim joined the U.S. Army to serve in WWII, fighting in both Austria and Germany. He selflessly braved the horrors of war - a sacrifice that was properly honored with a Purple Heart.

Jim also recently reached two major milestones. On March 31st, he celebrated his 100th birthday, and on April 16th, he rang in 80 years of marriage with his wife, Jean. The inspiring achievement places the Rittenhouses among the longest married couples in Georgia history - potentially even its record holders. Together, they share five children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

On Saturday, Congressman Clyde visited the Rittenhouses in Hiawassee, where he congratulated them both on their record-breaking marriage. After thanking Jim for his courageous service, Rep. Clyde presented him with an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol Building in his honor and a Special Georgian of the Ninth Certificate. The Congressman also presented Jean with a Special Georgian of the Ninth Certificate to commemorate the couple's 80th wedding anniversary and her upcoming 100th birthday.

"Jim Rittenhouse is a shining example of America's 'Greatest Generation,'" said Clyde. "From his valiant, selfless service to his record-breaking, unshakable marriage, Mr. Rittenhouse has consistently embodied an exceptional commitment to faith, family, and freedom. For over eight decades, he and Jean have shared a special bond and extraordinary love story - serving as a moving example for generations of Georgians. I'm deeply honored to recognize both Jim and Jean as Special Georgians of the Ninth, and I'm confident folks throughout Northeast Georgia and beyond will be inspired by their legendary legacy."
