Delaware Department of Human Resources Hosts Fireside Chat Honoring Veterans and Military Families

NEW CASTLE, Del - The Delaware Department of Human Resources (DHR) Division of People and Culture, in partnership with the Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs and the Delaware National Guard, brought together veterans and state leaders yesterday for a Veterans Day and National Veterans and Military Families Month Fireside Chat. The conversation, themed "Unified by Service," celebrated the dedication, leadership, and sacrifices of those who serve our country and our community.

The event featured a candid discussion with Brigadier General (Ret.) Karen Berry, Secretary of the Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs, remarks from Major General James. A. Benson, Adjutant General of the Delaware National Guard, and was moderated by Richard M. Potter, Jr., Director of the Delaware Department of Human Resources Division of People and Culture.

"Veterans and their families give so much every day," said Brigadier General (Ret.) Karen Berry, Secretary of the Delaware Department of Veterans Affairs. "It was inspiring to hear from them and to share this time reflecting on how we can support them as they move into civilian life."

"Our service members carry the values of leadership, teamwork, and resilience into every part of their lives," said Major General James A. Benson, Adjutant General of the Delaware National Guard. "It's important for all of us - employers, community leaders, and fellow citizens - to recognize their strengths and support their continued success.

"Delaware is stronger because of the commitment and service of our veterans and their families," said Governor Matt Meyer. "Conversations like today's remind us how important it is to listen, learn and honor them - not just in November, but all year long."

"As a department dedicated to serving the people who serve Delaware, it's our honor to recognize the veterans and families who continue to strengthen our state's workforce and communities," said Yvonne Anders Gordon, Secretary of the Delaware Department of Human Resources. "Their commitment, discipline, and sense of purpose embody the very best of public service."

"Today's Fireside Chat was a powerful reminder of how shared stories connect and inspire us," said Richard M. Potter, Jr., Director of the Delaware Department of Human Resources Division of People and Culture. "The energy and engagement from our audience-both in person and online-reflected a deep respect for our veterans and their families. Their courage, service, and commitment continue to unite us and strengthen the fabric of our workforce and communities."

During the discussion, attendees explored topics like workforce transition for veterans, the unique strengths veterans bring to civilian jobs, and ways employers can support military spouses and families.

The fireside chat was attended by state leaders, elected officials, representatives from veterans organizations, and State of Delaware employees participating via livestream.
