GDOT Awards Contract for Final Section of SR 20 Widening


CARTERSVILLE, GA - Work will soon be getting underway on the final section of the State Route 20 widening project from Canton to Cumming. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) awarded C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc. the contract to widening SR 20 from Union Hill Road to East Cherokee Road.

The $61.1 million project will likely get underway in the next two months. It's part of the larger SR 20 widening project that stretches from I-575 in Cherokee County to North Corners Parkway. It's the sixth and final phase of the widening. The first phase started construction in 2020.

The new phase will span about 4.2 miles and is expected to be completed in 2031.

"We're looking forward to getting started on the final phase of this project," said GDOT District Six Engineer Grant Waldrop. "Widening State Route 20 improves traffic flow and allows for the continued growth along this important roadway."
