Dear UAA Community,
The impact of Typhoon Halong in Western Alaska has been deeply felt across our university community. In response to the widespread devastation, Governor Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration, underscoring the severity of the situation and the urgent need for coordinated support. Our state has been significantly affected, and continued impact is expected. We extend our heartfelt concern to those who are experiencing uncertainty, displacement or the challenge of supporting family and friends affected by the storm.
We value our role as a community partner and UAA is actively working with organizations across Alaska to support the urgent needs of our communities in response to the recent disaster. Together, we are committed to helping Alaskans.
UAA is currently coordinating with the Municipality of Anchorage and local agencies to provide emergency shelter for approximately 400 residents displaced by the storm. The Auxiliary Gym at the Alaska Airlines Center (AAC) on our Anchorage campus will serve as the temporary shelter location. While we welcome and support our guests, please note that access to AAC will be limited.
We recognize events like this can be distressing and understand this is a challenging time for Alaskans, including students, faculty and staff at UAA. These devastating storms have disrupted our normal routines at work, in our studies and in daily life. I encourage anyone who may be affected by this event to prioritize their safety and wellbeing.
Your safety and wellbeing are our priority and UAA offers many campus resources for student support through the Student Health and Counseling Center, the Care Team, Dean of Students Office and the Indigenous and Rural Student Center. Additionally, we recommend that students connect directly with their professors if flexibility or support is needed in coursework. Faculty and staff are encouraged to contact UA Human Resources or work with their supervisor if their work has been impacted.
During challenging times like these, the strength of our UAA community shines through in the care and support we offer one another. In the days ahead, as the search and recovery process continues, please remember to look out for yourself, your peers and colleagues, and don't hesitate to reach out if you're needing support.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Siemers
UAA Interim Chancellor
