Sanitary Sewer Overflow Impacts Irish Buffalo Creek Tributary

An overflow within the City of Concord sanitary sewer system resulted in the discharge of approximately 2,000 gallons of untreated wastewater at 339, 341, and 343 Fox St SW in Concord. The overflow was primarily contained to the sewer right-of-way with a small amount of untreated wastewater entering a tributary of Irish Buffalo Creek.

The City of Concord Water Resources Department was notified of the overflow at approximately 6 p.m. on July 16, 2026, and it was contained and cleanup was completed by approximately 9:30 p.m. that same evening. The Department determined the overflow was caused by a blockage in the sewer system from rags and grease.

Per regulatory requirements, the overflow has been reported to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.
