The City Council voted 5-0 on June 15, 2026, to adopt a resolution prohibiting new camping along Andersen Drive between Lindaro and Irwin Streets. The prohibition on new camping takes effect immediately; a full prohibition on all camping along the corridor will take effect concurrent with the opening of the 350 Merrydale Road Interim Shelter, anticipated later this fall. The Council also received a staff report confirming that City Hall, the Public Safety Center, community centers, and libraries are "public facilities" under San Rafael Municipal Code Chapter 19.50, meaning camping at or around those sites is already prohibited by existing code. The Andersen Drive resolution reflects a commitment the City made publicly during the Merrydale community engagement process. The 350 Merrydale Interim Shelter, developed in partnership with the County of Marin, will provide 65 cabin units with on-site housing-based case management and supportive services. Individuals currently camping along Andersen Drive, along with current participants of the City's Sanctioned Camping Area on Mahon Creek Path, will have priority access to shelter placement. City outreach staff will begin structured engagement with individuals along the corridor in the months ahead to support the transition.
