Drive Sober This Memorial Day Weekend: OHS, Law Enforcement Agencies Announce DUI Checkpoint

DOVER, Del. (May 19, 2026) - The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS), in partnership with the Delaware State police and local law enforcement agencies across the state, will be conducting a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint on Friday, May 22nd, in Sussex County as part of Memorial Day Weekend enforcement efforts.

Memorial Day Weekend serves as the unofficial kickoff to summer travel, bringing increased traffic, celebrations, and a heightened risk of impaired driving crashes. Between 2021 and 2025, Delaware recorded 94 impaired driving crashes during Memorial Day Weekend, defined as the Friday before through Memorial Day Monday.

"As we prepare for the summer travel season, we encourage everyone on Delaware roads to make safe and responsible choices and plan ahead before celebrating," said Sharon Bryson, Director of the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. "Impaired driving is completely preventable, and every Delawarean deserves to make it home safely. If your plans include alcohol or impairing substances, designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or call a friend or family member."

Law enforcement agencies across Delaware will increase patrols and enforcement efforts throughout the holiday weekend to identify and remove impaired drivers from Delaware roadways. The DUI Checkpoint is one part of Delaware's ongoing commitment to reducing impaired driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

OHS reminds drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, cannabis, and other drugs can also affect judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making it unsafe and illegal to drive impaired.

Drivers are encouraged to:

  • Designate a sober driver before going out
  • Use rideshare or public transportation options
  • Never allow impaired friends or family members to drive
  • Always buckle up and obey posted speed limits
  • Stay alert and watch for increased traffic during the holiday weekend
