On April 25, 2026, Winnipeg Police Service officers arrested a 41-year-old man after an unprovoked assault was reported at the intersection of Abinojii Mikanah and St.Mary's Road.
At approximately 11:00 a.m., the 43-year-old victim was standing at the above-mentioned intersection where the suspect was panhandling. Without provocation, the suspect approached the victim and physically assaulted him. During the assault, the suspect unsuccessfully attempted to steal the victim's cellular phone. The victim sustained minor injuries which did not require medical attention and the suspect fled the area.
Shortly before 8:00 p.m., patrolling East District General Patrol members were dispatched to the same intersection regarding an unrelated panhandling event, where they located the suspect from the previously reported assault and arrested him without incident.
Daniel Ryan SMITH (41) is charged with Assault and was detained in custody.
