Fashion and beauty expert Kahlana Barfield Brown, pictured at center, is known for her modern yet timeless style and her years shaping conversations as fashion and beauty editor at InStyle. In 2022, she brought her vision to Target as the first partner for our owned brand, Future Collective, where her streetwear-meets-editorial collection became an instant hit. Now Kahlana is introducing, KBB by KAHLANA, her independently owned and designed collection, which launched Sept. 21, exclusively in select Target stores and on Target.com. The 42-piece size-inclusive women's clothing line, with everything priced under $100, blends sculptural silhouettes, layered shapes and rich textures in earthy heritage tones. The collection is designed for people living real lives, who want to look and feel their best every day.
We caught up with Kahlana to talk about her inspiration, her design process and what it means to bring KBB by KAHLANA to Target.
How would you describe KBB by KAHLANA, and what inspired it?
KBB by KAHLANA is a line of elevated essentials that combines low-key luxury with wearability. It's about creating clothing that is versatile, approachable and made for women who love fashion and want to feel confident without needing to shout it. The inspiration comes from my journey, growing up shopping with my Nana, navigating the fashion industry as a Black woman and realizing how many beautiful, well-made pieces excluded the women who were actually shaping culture. This brand is for women everywhere and is about showing up with quiet confidence every day.
You've called this "design that speaks without shouting." What does quiet confidence mean to you in fashion and in life?
Quiet confidence is about knowing your value and showing up authentically without needing external validation. In fashion, it is wearing pieces that make you feel empowered without needing to be flashy. In life, it is about making decisions rooted in integrity, resilience and purpose, even when others doubt or misunderstand you. It is calm, deliberate strength and that is exactly the energy I wanted this brand to convey.
How is this collection different from what you've done before?
This is the first line that's fully mine, independently owned and designed from start to finish. My work with Target's Future Collective allowed me to gain experience as a designer and bring my vision into an existing framework, but KBB by KAHLANA is completely my style, my voice and my vision. Every decision, from fabric to fit to finish, was intentional.
What was the design process like?
The process was meticulous and deeply personal. I worked closely with Crystal White, my vice president of design, and our diverse team to map out every detail. We focused on creating timeless pieces that feel modern, with thoughtful touches like adjustable waistbands, flattering silhouettes and quality materials. It was about balancing beauty, wearability and empowerment, making sure every woman who wears KBB feels seen and confident.
Can you share any surprising details or meaningful personal references within the collection?
Many details nod to my personal journey. The color palette reflects the creamy, luxurious neutrals I loved as a child. Every piece is designed for real women with curves, multiple body types and busy lives. Denim has a special place in the collection, reflecting my lifelong love of it. I've been collecting vintage denim since college, and there are five styles of jeans in the first collection, each designed to be flattering and versatile. Every detail, from the hangtags to the fabric choices, was intentional and meaningful.
Do you have a favorite way to style or combine pieces from the line?
I love mixing and matching pieces across the collection to create looks that feel effortless but polished. A tailored blazer with oversized jeans or a sweatsuit with an overcoat are some of my favorites. Layering textures with crisp cotton or structured jackets with fluid silhouettes makes every look feel intentional and approachable.
If your younger self walked into Target and saw your label on the racks, how do you think she'd react?
She'd probably be speechless for a moment, just standing there in awe. Then she would touch the fabric, read the hangtags and smile, realizing that her dreams of creating beautiful clothing for women everywhere had come true.
