Inside the Frontline Training Powering Ukraine’s Defense

Training is not about theory, but hard practice based on the realities of war. In one of the dozen or so training modules taking place at the time, the final days were spent acquiring and honing shooting skills, both individually and as part of a team.

In wartime, the ability to use a weapon accurately and safely is the absolute foundation of survival. In the heat of battle, where stress and fatigue limit motor skills, developed shooting reflexes allow soldiers to effectively eliminate threats before they become targets. In close-quarters combat, such as trench warfare or urban areas, the speed of positioning and accuracy can decide the difference between life and death in a split second.

Thanks to EU support, soldiers return to the front lines stronger not only technically but also mentally. Every hour spent on a Polish training ground offers a real chance to save lives and more effectively defend Ukraine.

The EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend Ukraine's territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors. EUMAM works closely together with all other like-minded international partners to provide training support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. EUMAM is open to the participation of third states. All mission activities are located on EU soil. So far, 24 EU Member States have offered training modules and personnel. The training is supported by the provision of equipment for lethal and non-lethal purposes to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This equipment is provided by Member States and funded by the European Peace Facility.
