(Washington, D.C.) - On Friday, July 17, 2026, Congressman Al Green commemorated the enduring legacy of civil rights icon and former Congressman theHonorable John Lewis, whose remarkable courage and commitment to justice helped transform America by securing and protecting the fundamental right to vote.
Congressman John Lewis' leadership during the Civil Rights Movement, including his willingness to face violence on the Edmund Pettus Bridge during the historic march known as Bloody Sunday, inspired the conscience of our nation and helped lead to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His sacrifice, along with the sacrifices of countless others, expanded the promise of democracy and reaffirmed that every American deserves an equal voice at the ballot box.
Congressman Al Green stated, "Today, I honor my friend and former colleague, Congressman John Lewis. His leadership was a testament to the power of courage, conviction, and nonviolent resistance. On the Edmund Pettus Bridge, he and others endured unspeakable brutality so that generations of Americans could exercise the right to vote. We must never forget what it took to secure the right to vote, because it takes less to keep it than to get it. It is a peaceful instrument through which every American can make their voice heard, hold government accountable, and help shape a more perfect union. As we commemorate and honor Congressman John Lewis' legacy, let us continue making good trouble by defending the right to vote and by renewing the call to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act."
