Regal Renaissance: Bowie State Crowns a Royal Court Rooted in Leadership and Legacy

At Bowie State University, a crown is more than an accessory. It is a responsibility. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the university crowned its 2026-27 Royal Court during the annual Coronation of Mister and Miss Bowie State University, a homecoming week highlight themed "Regal Renaissance."

Leading the court are Chiamaka Ekekwe, the 80th Miss Bowie State University, and Ryan Lynch, the 34th Mister Bowie State University. Both are senior communications majors from Prince George's County, Maryland, and members of historically Black Greek-letter organizations. Ekekwe joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. in spring 2025, and Lynch joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. in spring 2026. Together, they represent Bulldog Nation with a shared commitment to service and leadership.

The elegance of the evening was unmistakable as Bowie State University President Aminta H. Breaux, dressed in a striking black gown, presented Ekekwe and Lynch with their royal sashes and crowns. The newly crowned royal couple stood in coordinated white attire, adding to the regal atmosphere of the ceremony.

"Representing Bowie State University as the 34th Mister Bowie State is a huge blessing," Ryan Lynch said. "Having served as Mister Freshman, Mister Sophomore, and Mister Junior, this moment feels full circle. Every year has taught me something different about leadership, service, and the responsibility that comes with representing others. To me, this role is an opportunity to represent the people, traditions, and values that make Bowie State special while showing the next generation what is possible when you lead with purpose, stay true to yourself, and trust God's plan."

Ekewkwe said, "Representing Bowie State University means so much more to me than wearing a crown and sash. It means representing a university that has helped shape me into the woman I am today. From serving as Miss Freshman to now having the honor of serving as the 80th Miss Bowie State University, I've grown alongside the very institution I represent. To me, this role is about being a voice for my peers, creating opportunities for others, and showing what it truly means to lead with purpose."

Their titles reflect a tradition that spans generations at historically Black colleges and universities. HBCU royal courts recognize student leaders who demonstrate academic achievement, campus pride, public service and Black excellence. Today, coronation remains a defining part of HBCU homecoming traditions.

At Bowie State, Maryland's oldest historically Black university, the royal tradition evolved alongside the institution. The title took root after the school became Maryland State Teachers College at Bowie in 1938, when the honor focused on Miss Bowie State and celebrated women's leadership and academic excellence. As the institution grew, the court expanded to include Mister Bowie State University and class royalty.

This year's court also includes Xaria Martinez and Elijah Boulware, Miss and Mister Black and Gold, a tribute to the university's colors; Kaylie Hicks and Tyvon Clark, Miss and Mister 1865, honoring the year Bowie State was founded; and Onyeka Adigwe and Elliot Daniles, Miss and Mister Regal Renaissance, representing this year's theme.

Class royalty includes Miss Senior Aniya Smith and Mister Senior DeeAndrew Hogan; Miss Junior Efe Ahworegba and Mister Junior Kenneth McLeish; Miss Sophomore Erica Bryant and Mister Sophomore Zavien McCullough; and Miss Freshman Chyann Wicker and Mister Freshman Jim Malara. Shanyiah McCray serves as assistant to the Royal Court.

Throughout the academic year, Royal Court members serve as official university ambassadors, representing Bowie State at campus events and in the community. Through their leadership and service, they carry forward a legacy shaped by generations of Bulldogs, many of whom were in the audience on this special evening.
