MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC//
SUBJ/ARMED FORCES DAY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. On this Armed Forces Day, Marines join our fellow
Service members in recognizing the men and women in uniform across
the Joint Force for our shared commitment to support and defend the
Constitution.
2. Armed Forces Day emerged during a period of major reform in the
Nation's defense establishment following World War II. As the
United States reorganized its military through the National
Security Act of 1947, national leaders recognized the
importance of highlighting the collective strength and readiness
of the Armed Forces. Beginning in 1950, the third Saturday
in May was set aside to recognize the men and women serving on
active duty across the military Services and to emphasize the
importance of cooperation and unity within the Joint Force.
3. Today, the United States Armed Forces remain a forward-deployed
and ready force, prepared to deter aggression, respond to crises,
and defend the Nation's interests around the world. Within this
Joint Force, Marines operate alongside Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen,
Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen to meet evolving security challenges
through rigorous training and close cooperation across the Services.
The strength of this force rests on the professionalism, character,
and commitment of those in uniform, supported by their families,
civilian teammates, and communities, who ensure our military remains
ready to meet the demands of today and tomorrow.
4. Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
