ICYMI: Alaska Press Highlights Marine Corps’ Expanded Presence in the Last Frontier

05.12.26

WASHINGTON-U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support and a retired colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, recently announced the United States Marine Corps' "Campaign-Alaska," a new strategic initiative to expand the Corps' operational capabilities in the Arctic. Sen. Sullivan has long advocated for a stronger Marine Corps presence in Alaska, arguing that the state's geography, training ranges, airspace, military infrastructure, and proximity to the Arctic and Indo-Pacific make it uniquely suited for Marine Corps operations.

As reported by Alaska's News Source and the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the announcement was made at the University of Alaska Fairbanks alongside Lt. Gen. Roberta L. Shea, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command and U.S. Marine Corps Forces North. The initiative includes two major components: Marine Rotational Force-Alaska, which will bring Marines to Alaska for Arctic training and operational readiness, and a persistent Marine Reserve presence at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson through a Supporting Arms Liaison Team from 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, or 6th ANGLICO.

As reported by Alaska's News Source, Lt. Gen. Shea said Marine Rotational Force-Alaska will take advantage of Alaska's unmatched training environment, ranges, command and control structure, and joint partners to strengthen homeland defense, Arctic readiness, deterrence, and interoperability with allies. The persistent 6th ANGLICO detachment at JBER will bring what Shea called "a vital Marine Corps capability" to Alaska through some of the Corps' top Joint Terminal Attack Controllers.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner also highlighted that this is part of a broader buildup of the military in Alaska:

"Sullivan noted that the Marine Corps' announcement signifies the latest 'in a historic military buildup in our state.' He cited other examples, such as a multi-million fighter jet simulation training center and $7 billion recapitalization effort at JBER, multimillion-dollar investments at Eielson and Fort Wainwright, the buildup of the 11th Airborne Division and improvements in missile defense systems at Fort Greely and Clear Space Force Station."

Background

The Campaign-Alaska announcement comes amid a broader military comeback in Alaska, including major investments in Arctic defense, fifth-generation fighter infrastructure, missile defense, Coast Guard expansion, and renewed recognition of Alaska's strategic role in U.S. national security.
