West Nile Virus detected in dead birds in Lakewood

West Nile Virus detected in dead birds in Lakewood

Published on August 20, 2026

The Greater L.A. County Vector Control District (GLACVCD) has tested and found West Nile Virus on dead birds found in Lakewood zip codes 90712, 90713 and 90715.

An infected mosquito can bite any animal, but not all animals will become infected. Birds, such as crows, ravens, magpies and jays, are most often affected.

If you come across a dead bird near your home

Please follow these steps:

  1. Call the CA Dept of Public Health hotline at 1-877-WNV-BIRD or submit an online report at Westnile.ca.gov. Not all birds will qualify for testing, but they will record all reports of dead birds.
  2. Use rubber or latex gloves or a shovel to pick up the bird and place it in a double-layered plastic bag.
  3. If the bird is not picked up for testing, seal and discard the bag in your regular trash cart.

Greater Los Angeles Vector Control will have additional surveillance of those areas which have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
