In their meeting on Tuesday 15 September, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed Finland's ongoing support for Ukraine and efforts to increase pressure on Russia. Finland condemns Russia's attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The President and the Ministerial Committee also discussed the security situation in the Gulf region. Tensions are escalating again in the Gulf region and in the Middle East as a whole. Disruptions in maritime transport have continued, especially in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Finland has primarily advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the situation, emphasised respect for international law and engaged in discussions with its partners and allies.
The President and the Ministerial Committee also received reports on the current security situation from the Finnish Security Intelligence Service and military intelligence. The reports focused on the threat posed by Russia in Europe.
In addition, the President and the Ministerial Committee discussed Finland's objectives for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and its high-level week. Finland's main objectives are to strengthen and broaden support for Ukraine, deepen international partnerships and promote Finland's candidacy for the UN Security Council.
The President and the Ministerial Committee also noted that the European Arctic Summit held in Rovaniemi on 13-14 September had achieved its objective of highlighting the strategic importance of the Arctic region.
