The District of Maine Joins DOJ Fraud Division, IRS, and IRS-CI in National Tax Enforcement Surge Exposing $490M in Tax Fraud

More than 30 U.S. Attorney's Offices joined the Fraud Division in bringing enforcement actions against alleged fraudsters

PORTLAND, Maine: The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Maine today announced a sentencing as part of a nationwide enforcement action led by the Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division, Internal Revenue Service, and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation targeting tax fraud and related offenses. The District of Maine was a key participant in this surge effort.

Between early September and today, federal prosecutors across the country facilitated fraud enforcement actions spanning over 76 criminal defendants, reaching approximately 490 million dollars in intended loss to American taxpayers.

"Tax fraud and related offenses are serious crimes that undermine the integrity of our tax system and shift the tax burden to honest tax payers," said U.S. Attorney Andrew B. Benson. "We are very pleased and encouraged to be part of the DOJ's efforts to uncover and prosecute these crimes."

As part of this National Tax Enforcement Surge, an Auburn woman was sentenced on October 13, 2026, in U.S. District Court in Portland for filing a false tax return and interfering with the administration of federal tax laws.

U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. sentenced Rakiya Mohamed, 30, to five years probation. She was also ordered to pay $51,001 in restitution to the IRS.

According to court records, Mohamed filed false federal income tax returns for 2018 and 2019 and provided false records to the IRS when those tax returns were audited. Mohamed owned a language interpretation business called Reliable Language Resources. Mohamed reported the income and expenses for the business on her individual income tax returns and also reported false and fraudulent expenses for contract labor and office expenses. The IRS audited Mohamed's 2018 and 2019 tax returns, and Mohamed provided the auditors with falsified business records to substantiate the false and fraudulent expenses.

IRS Criminal Investigation investigated the case.
