Duckworth Votes Against Department of Homeland Security Funding Bill

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - As our nation continues to see Trump's lawless federal agents repeatedly use excessive force and kill American citizens, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today voted against the government funding package that included the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill:

"Alex Pretti was publicly executed while trying to protect a woman from being assaulted-just two weeks after Trump's agents had already gunned down another citizen in Minneapolis. The American people are crying out for accountability-and I could not vote to bankroll Trump's lawless agents to continue terrorizing our communities.

"Democrats have outlined three very reasonable safeguards to address the vicious abuses we've seen in Chicago, Minneapolis and across the country. It shouldn't be difficult for Senate Republicans to both prevent a government shutdown and protect American citizens from being killed in their own communities by their government-and I'm deeply disappointed they refused to work with us to achieve those goals today.

"I'm also pushing for independent investigations into these tragic killings. The Trump Administration has proven beyond a doubt that it cannot be trusted to investigate their own untrained, unhinged agents. All Americans expect and deserve a government that tells the truth and doesn't murder its citizens.

"Senate Republicans must come to their senses, listen to the American people and help us overhaul the DHS funding bill. Lives are at stake."
