Work on the GCCC Natatorium air handling units will continue as our contractor completes the necessary repairs and works to ensure these systems are reliable and operating properly for the long term. The Natatorium relies on two large, purpose-built dehumidification units that provide fresh and recirculated air throughout the facility. Keeping these systems functioning properly is essential to maintaining a safe, comfortable environment for everyone who uses the pool.

What are we doing to help prevent these types of issues in the future?

Our pools are an important part of our community, and we are taking the condition of these facilities and their critical systems seriously. The FY27 City Budget includes funding for maintenance that has been postponed or deferred for years, allowing the City to address some of the aging infrastructure and equipment needs across our recreation facilities now.

Recreation and the Facilities Management Division are working closely to identify, prioritize and plan for critical repairs and replacements across our recreation complexes. This work is focused not only on responding when equipment fails, but also on improving preventive maintenance and planning for the future.

Recreation has also recently added a second Aquatic Technician position to our Aquatics team. This additional staffing capacity will strengthen our ability to monitor equipment, respond to issues and conduct preventive maintenance to help keep our pools operating safely and reliably.

The GCCC Natatorium, along with each City of Santa Fe municipal pool, is also included in the City's Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP). This long-term planning process helps us identify significant infrastructure needs and prioritize future investments in our community pools.

We are committed to taking care of our pools, addressing both immediate needs and long-term infrastructure challenges, and continuing to make the investments necessary to keep these important community resources available for years to come.

Salvador Perez Pool and Lifeguard Staffing Update

While we have made progress in lifeguard recruitment, we continue to have significant staffing needs across our Aquatics program. There are currently 15 lifeguard vacancies, and additional lifeguards are needed to expand hours of operation at both Fort Marcy Swimming Pool and the GCCC Natatorium.

If you or someone in your network is interested in learning more about lifeguard opportunities with the City, please contact Abby Smith at [email protected].

The City is also currently conducting a feasibility study to evaluate options and determine a path forward for Salvador Perez Pool. Once the study is complete, its findings will be presented to City leadership to help inform decisions about the facility's future.
