New Program Cuts Heat Pump Costs for Households
Published on April 16, 2026
The City and County of Denver, alongside other Front Range communities, is offering a new way for homeowners to save money on home upgrades through the Switch Together Heat Pump Group Buy. Participating communities include Denver, Nederland, Erie, Broomfield, Wheat Ridge, Westminster, Northglenn, and Longmont.
Well known for their successful solar programs, Switch Together is now helping families electrify their homes with efficient heat pump technology. The program is supported by national nonprofit Solar United Neighbors and aims to make sustainable home upgrades more affordable and accessible for everyone.
This announcement comes during Earth Month, as Denver encourages community members to "Do More. Do Less. Do Something." to support a climate resilient city. At the beginning of 2026, Denver launched a citywide goal to install 5,000 clean energy systems citywide and develop 50 acres of green infrastructure. Group buy programs like Switch Together make clean energy upgrades at home simpler for community members by reducing cost and complexity and giving neighbors an easier, more affordable path to make upgrades that lower energy bills and improve comfort.
To date, Switch Together has delivered 50 solar programs across the U.S., with more than 100,000 families joining the program. These programs have generated $138M in lifetime energy savings. After a successful pilot, the heat pump program is now quickly expanding to more cities.
"Heat pumps are a great way to use the electricity solar panels generate," said Austin Mickles, Solar United Neighbors Colorado Program Navigator. "Working through Switch Together, participants can learn about both technologies, how they can lower energy bills, and if making the switch is right for them."
"Denver is accelerating toward a future where every neighborhood is powered by clean energy and protected from climate risks," said Elizabeth Babcock, Executive Director of Denver's Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency. "Programs like Switch Together make these upgrades more accessible and affordable, helping families cut pollution, stay comfortable, and contribute to our citywide goal of installing 5,000 clean energy systems in 2026."
How Does it Work?
The program organizes qualified contractors who compete to offer their most competitive prices for installing a heat pump system. Households that participate in the current heat pump program are expected to receive an average discount of 9.2% compared to the standard market price for heat pump installations. In addition to this group discount, households may qualify for additional incentives from Xcel Energy, the State of Colorado and Power Ahead Colorado, further increasing potential savings.
As a featured Earth Month action, the Switch Together Heat Pump Group Buy helps people "do something" meaningful for the climate by adopting clean energy systems that cut carbon pollution and add much-needed home cooling as Denver prepares for hotter, drier summers.
