WASHINGTON, DC-Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (NM-01)released the following statement on the shutdown of the federal government after Donald Trump and the Republican-led Congress refused to negotiate to keep the government open and address the imminent healthcare crisis:
"Tonight, it is clear that Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress would rather shut down the government than fund vital programs and address the looming healthcare crisis that will affect tens of millions of Americans. For months, Democrats have sought to negotiate in good faith and have fought to stop cuts to healthcare, food, education, and other essential programs. But Republicans have rammed through cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and basic healthcare programs that threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions, all while giving permanent tax breaks to billionaires.
"Meanwhile, Republicans canceled votes and refused to even show up at the Capitol to work this week, allowing the government to shut down.
"We won't stand idly by as they systematically destroy the programs our communities depend on. We're here to fight for our communities-even if Republicans won't show up to do their jobs. Thankfully, New Mexico is leading the way and will convene a special legislative session starting tomorrow to address the healthcare, food assistance, and public broadcasting cuts that Republicans forced through at the federal level," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury.
