Dome Fire Update, September 28, 2026 (morning)

Current Situation

5,215 acres
30% containment

• The fire has grown 406 acres since yesterday morning and remains 30% contained. Containment is increasing.

• The fire's primary growth has been to the north and northeast at a moderated pace.

• Hoselines have been laid along handlines along the north and northeast side of the fire to assist with control.

• Forecasted cooler temperatures and higher humidities will assist in containment efforts through Tuesday.

• Crews continue to improve and widen containment lines near Bridalveil Creek, Empire Meadows and Horse Ridge.

• Crews have been backhauling hose and equipment along well contained areas of the fire.

• No roads, buildings or utilities are under immediate threat.

Weather

Cool temperatures and higher humidity will aid efforts to strengthen containment lines. Winds are expected to shift to the west and northwest; however, they will remain light.

Closures

Park Closures

Yosemite National Park is open and operating normally, with the following exceptions. Glacier Point Road is closed due to reduced visibility from smoke along and to safely allow firefighting operations. There are no imminent threats to infrastructure. The Four Mile Trail and Panorama Trail, providing access to Glacier Point, will remain open to hikers. Glacier Point Road will reopen when conditions allow. Backpackers already parked overnight at Glacier Point will be allowed to exit after the closure begins. The Chilnualna Falls trail, as well as the trails from the top of Chilnualna Falls toward Buena Vista and Crescent Lakes, are closed due to the Dome Fire. (These lakes are reachable from the east.) The Ostrander Lake Trail and all areas and trails south of it are closed. The closed area extends east of the Wawona Road from Wawona to Chinquapin, as seen on the public information map.

General Closures

The Mariposa-Yosemite Airport is closed to general aviation traffic. No civilian aircraft may take off or land from KMPI at this time.

Smoke Outlook

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are expected to moderate fire behavior today, leading to less smoke production. GOOD air quality today for Tuolumne Meadows, El Portal, Hodgdon Meadow, and Mariposa. Northwest winds in the afternoon shifting to the northeast later in the evening will bring smoke to Wawona, with MODERATE air quality overall and periods of UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS in the evening and overnight. Yosemite is expected to experience MODERATE air quality overall.
