Wang Named Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Letters

Jiacun Wang, Ph.D., professor of computer science and software engineering at Monmouth University, has been named editor-in-chief of IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Letters (L-SMC), a peer-reviewed journal of the world's largest technical professional organization.

Wang, who directs the University's graduate programs in computer science and data science, will begin a three-year term in January 2027. He has led the journal on an interim basis since March 2026.

"I am honored to take on this role and grateful for the opportunity to serve the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society," Wang said. "I am also grateful to my colleagues and students at Monmouth University for their continued support and for providing an environment that encourages research and collaboration. I look forward to receiving submissions from our faculty and students."

L-SMC publishes brief, high-impact papers on emerging ideas and new applications, with an emphasis on getting timely findings to researchers quickly. Its scope spans systems science and engineering, human-machine systems, computational social systems, and cybernetics, including work on systems modeling and simulation, human factors engineering, control, and optimization. The journal aims to advance the next generation of human-machine intelligence systems.

The appointment builds on about two decades of involvement with the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, where Wang has served as a conference organizer, journal editor, and associate vice president for finance, among other roles. He has been a voting member of the Board of Governors since January 2024, has been an IEEE senior member since 2000, and has written four books and more than 200 papers.

Wang's research spans artificial intelligence, software engineering, formal methods, discrete event systems, and service computing. His work applying AI to real-world challenges in health care and emergency management, supported by multiple IEEE grants, earned him a Monmouth University Distinguished Scholar Award in 2025, one of three inaugural co-recipients.

A member of the Monmouth faculty since 2004, Wang has made student involvement a hallmark of his research, supervising master's theses, hiring graduate research assistants, and advising summer research projects. In 2024, he traveled with a computer science senior to Kuching, Malaysia, where she presented IEEE-funded humanoid robot research at the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics.

IEEE has more than 533,000 members in over 190 countries.
