Congressman Krishnamoorthi Demands USDA Reinstate Household Food Security Report Amid Rising Hunger and SNAP Cuts

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) today called on Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins to immediately reverse the Trump Administration's decision to cancel the annual Household Food Security Report, a critical tool for tracking hunger in the United States.

"With millions of Americans being impacted by the largest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in U.S. history and rising grocery prices, the Household Food Security Report is more important than ever," Congressman Krishnamoorthi wrote in the letter to Secretary Rollins.

The report has informed state and federal decision on food assistance programs for nearly three decades. The most recent version found 18 million U.S. households were food insecure at some point in 2023, one million more than the previous year. "Without this data, federal and state lawmakers will not have the necessary data to understand how President Trump's SNAP cuts are affecting food access for families," Congressman Krishnamoorthi warned.

The congressman noted that Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) slashed SNAP by $186 billion, putting at least 205,000 Illinois residents at immediate risk of losing benefits, adding, "President Trump and Congressional Republicans are chipping away at resources Americans need to feed their families, while defunding the survey that analyzes the impact."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi also linked rising grocery prices to administration policies: "In August, grocery prices rose at their fastest pace in three years, directly related to short-sighted tariff and immigration policies from the Trump administration. Today, more than half of Americans cite grocery costs as a major source of stress."

Congressman Krishnamoorthi criticized USDA's justification for canceling the report, in which officials claimed it was "redundant and politically motivated." He responded, "If USDA and the Trump administration maintain that this report is 'redundant and politically motivated,' officials must prove this to the public."

The congressman concluded his letter by urging the USDA to reverse course: "I strongly urge you to reconsider funding the Household Food Security Report, so lawmakers and the American people can clearly see the impact of cuts to SNAP and other vital nutrition assistance programs."
